Planning Commission will consider the Plan Update on January 26

The Bellevue Community Plan Update is scheduled to go to the Planning Commission at its January 26 regular meeting, which will begin at 4 pm in the Sonny West Conference Center at Metro’s Howard Office Building, 700 Second Avenue South. The draft update is posted here.

What is a Community Plan, and why is it being updated?

Davidson County is divided into fourteen communities for planning purposes, and each one has a Community Plan which guides its growth and development. Each Community Plan is updated every seven to ten years; Bellevue’s plan was most recently updated in 2003, and can be seen on the Planning Department webpage. Our Community Plans page has more information about how the plans are drawn up and what they do.

Who decides what’s in the plan?

Public comment and involvement are at the heart of the entire update process, which takes several months with many opportunities for community input. We begin with “visioning” sessions, where Bellevue residents, property owners, business owners, and other stakeholders will discuss, directly with Metro planners, how they think Bellevue should look in years to come. Planners take that guidance and draw up a draft update, which is then reviewed and refined in more public meetings; documents are also posted on our webpage for further public examination.

Finally, the revised draft plan goes to the Planning Commission for approval. Once approved, it sets both a vision for the community’s future and guidelines for carrying out that vision.

How long does it take?

About a year. Our most recent Community Plan update, in North Nashville, began in late January 2010 and was approved by the Planning Commission in January 2011.

All,

I have arranged for us to meet at Faithworks offices in Plantation Court at 8327 Sawyer Brown Road on Thursday, December 15 at 6:30. I wouldn’t anticipate this meeting taking much more than an hour. Given the multiple requests I’ve had about this issue and that no time seems to be a good time for everyone, I thought we’d have a preliminary discussion and then I’ll plan a couple more mid to end of January so as to afford everyone an opportunity to meet and see the suggestions to alleviate some of the backup caused by the 1500 or so cars that travel Sawyer Brown daily. Please let me know if you will attend. Best wishes for a Happy Holiday season if I don’t see you there.

Warm Regards,
